About De Hunekamp
De Hunekamp in Loenen is a place with a rich history. As early as 1666, a paper mill stood here, powered by the clear water of the spring-fed creek. At the end of the 19th century, the building was repurposed as a laundry, where the Aarnink family began washing for customers from the surrounding region in 1894. The natural power of the water was later replaced by a steam engine, and after a major fire in 1920, the current building was constructed.
The history
17th century
The first paper mill at this location, powered by the water of the spring-fed stream. The mill produced paper for the growing paper industry in the Loenen region.
18th century
The paper mill remains in operation and continues to play an important role in the local economy. Its location by the stream remains essential for generating the water power that drives the mill.
19th century
The paper mill is transformed into a laundry. In 1894, A.J. Aarnink establishes his laundry business here, using the clear spring water. Later, the water power is replaced by a steam engine, leading to modernization and growth.
Present day
After a major fire in 1919, the building was rebuilt in 1920. Today, De Hunekamp is a municipal monument and a business hub where innovative and technical companies come together in an inspiring historical environment.
